This week – New Bread Shop (and coffee!)
July 25, 2020
No peas, no apricots or fava beans this week….
Instead – we welcome you all to a new chapter in our lives! This coming week the Shop will be closed on Sunday 26th and Monday 27th, allowing our builders time to break through from the ‘old’ shop into the ‘new’. Some of you will remember the corner shop opposite the Restaurant. For many years it was the show room of Robert Kime, the wonderfully talented interior designer. When he decided to re-locate to Pimlico, we were hot on the phone to his landlord – these beautiful premises were not to be missed!
Several months (perhaps well over a year) later, and many re drawing of plans and re thinking of ideas, we decided to extend the existing shop into the very beautiful set of 2 rooms, allowing each room to offer a variety of home made, hand shaped, and specially sourced items for you to enjoy at home.
In the Kensington Church Street window stands a most handsome 19th Century French brass bread display, which has been lovingly and painstakingly restored over the recent weeks in an immaculately run metal workshop in south London. We are longing to display our fabulous long-fermented loaves and croissants on these shelves later this week.
Since March, we have taken the opportunity to install a new cappuccino machine and our staff have been given thorough barista training, covering skills such as achieving the perfect amount of minuscule brown specks within the crema, the shine and density of the milk as it is poured into the cup – and so much more
In our Production Kitchen, we have created a fabulous range of sandwiches which will be served wrapped in our new wax paper. These will be perfect for a snack on the run, at your desk or in the park.
Next door, in the ‘middle’ shop, you may recognise the oak dresser which was housed in our shop next to the restaurant over 25 years ago. This used to display our jams and marmalades, but is now home to a broad and varied selection of wines, including our own label Sauvignon blanc, Pinot noir and Rosé. From here you will enter the existing shop, where we will utilise the newly acquired ‘extra’ space to carefully arrange the selection of takeaway dishes, sweet and savoury tarts and pies, soups, sauces, cakes, biscuits, chocolates, pantry essentials and olive oils.
Once social distancing is a thing of the past, you will be free to walk from one end of the shop to the other, but for now we will continue to allow 2 in and 2 out at both the corner shop entrance and the existing shop door. As you know masks are now mandatory for shop customers. Our staff are wearing masks at all times behind the counter and we regularly review our COVID-aware procedures, keeping you and our team safe.
Thank you for your patience, for your kind and supportive messages, both verbally and by email – we appreciate you, our wonderfully loyal and generously-spirited customers. We wish you all good health and good cheer as we work our way through these terrible times, into a happier and brighter future. And on that note – from September 2nd the Restaurant will be open for Dinner, and from October, for Lunch and Dinner. So please book online – or send us an email!
Sally and the team.
