Behind the scenes, our plans for the corner shop are moving slowly but steadily – although nothing to show yet! But we are getting there … (For those of you who missed the last newsletter, our BIG news is that last month we signed a lease for the beautiful shop opposite the Restaurant. So please keep tuned!)

We are all keeping our fingers crossed that the late spring weather will continue to shine on us. The wisteria of Kensington must be (after Paul Smith’s pink wall in LA) one of the most Instagrammed images of all time, and buds, both purple and white are about to burst as I write. The apple and magnolia blossoms seem to herald a happy summer – so at the Restaurant, Shop and Production Kitchen, we are preparing ourselves for a busy time.

 

In the dining rooms and Bar room we have cherry blossom on huge branches and on the tables, delicate terracotta pots are filled with sweet-smelling sage plants. Through the windows of the Main dining room and the Garden room, we note that the terraced planting goes from strength to strength. We must have every green known to man in our little garden– so happy it is looking. And on the subject of the Garden room, many of you will be pleased to ‘hear’ that the acoustic ceiling has now been fitted – and what a difference it makes! Come in and test it out for yourselves….

 

Our beautiful bespoke Picnics for the various Opera Festivals, school fêtes, Chelsea Flower Show, tennis and cricket matches will be on offer from the Shop throughout the Summer.

All you have to do is choose from a vast array of ideas – from Roasted Chicken Pie, Spiced Lamb Calzone, Smoked Salmon Roulade, Sausage Rolls, Vegetable Tarts and Asparagus Puff Pastry; partner them with one of our fabulous salads, made freshly every day, combining a variety of grains, vegetables, herbs and dressings. Desserts are simple – from a bag of cherries, washed and ready to eat with a selection of cheeses perhaps, to mini carrot cake, macaroons, financier and madeleine.

We will pack everything into a Clarke’s Cool Bag if you wish, or a Sally Clarke hessian bag (which is a lovely mid-purple colour this year). Alternatively just bring your own cool bag and we will fill it up for you. Champagne, wines, juices, chocolate truffles, cheeses, oatmeal biscuits, baguettes … you name it, we will try our best to provide it.

NB Please give 5 days notice if you require a particular item.

 

Look out for the new Pump Street Chocolate Milk made by The Estate Dairy, Compton

Martin in Somerset. It will be delivered to us every week in cute 250ml glass bottles, so ask for yours to be put on one side – served deliciously chilled, it is perfect for kids of all ages!

For those who prefer something with a bit more of a kick, our new 2018 batch of vin d’orange is bottled, wax-topped and labelled! Grab your bottle now – poured over ice with a twist of orange peel, it is too special for words!

 

Sunday Lunches at the Restaurant are going well – with some customers even making

repeat bookings for every weekend. Rib of Rhug Estate organic beef is a firm favourite with many, roasted in the traditional way and served with horseradish and chive cream, and mini Yorkshire puddings. For those who prefer something a little less robust, there is always a wide choice of dishes to suit the whole family.

Our Private Room is proving to be popular and many dates from now to the Autumn are already booked. We offer a bespoke service for this, as every party and every host requires something different, be it for a Wedding Anniversary, surprise Birthday, a Corporate event, Business breakfast meeting or a Cocktail party – we have done them all – so just call us – we are expert at planning it!

In the meanwhile, we will get back to work and look forward to seeing you, on one side of the road or the other – or even both! – very soon.
