late autumn newsletter ~ 2026 ~
October 30, 2026

We have all been praying for rain since early summer … but now listen to us! The complaints we hear from some of those coming through our doors, dripping wet, muddy feet, soaked umbrellas and more, makes us think that memories can, on occasion, be very short!
We know that the farmers are thankful, as are the parks, gardens, and window boxes – let’s just hope that this wet doesn’t go on for too long!
Meanwhile, inside the warm, dry, and comforting dining rooms at Clarke’s, we are most definitely in mid-to-late autumn mode; lots of girolles, pumpkins, and squash. Sadly, we have seen the last of the purple figs and the blackberries alongside them.
The first of the quince, pears, Brussel tops, and puntarelle are already on the menus, plus some of the most gorgeously fat scallops (in their shells) that I have ever seen landed at our door from Scotland this week. Shall we serve them raw, sprinkled with lime, olive oil, and bottarga, or seared with wild mushrooms and sage leaves? Too much choice!

To many, this is the most exciting (and bountiful) of all the seasons … so let’s make the most of it!
